Saturday, May 14 = the notorious River Bank Run

My race is on Saturday. Holy goodness. I’m a mix of excited, nervous, mentally prepared, and yet, still unprepared. I can’t wait to run this—I’ve been training hard for it. I’m nervous as heck—I’ve only ever run 12 miles (the race is 15!). I’m focused—words of empowerment have been swirling through my head since yesterday when I ran a particularly painful 9-10 miles. I’m totally freaking out—this is one of/the biggest 25K in the nation and I can’t fathom the number of people that will be there. It’s an overwhelming thought. But our shirts are ready, my sisters and I are pumping each other up, and I have Friday off to drive into Grand Rapids to get ready. I can do this. My sisters and I—we can do this.

Things that are keeping me going this week:

Words – My last long run yesterday sucked (thanks to moving out of one 2nd floor apartment and into a new 2nd floor apartment on Friday and Saturday—oh the stairs!), which caused me to repeat these words over and over during my last 10 mins:

  • Fighter
  • Strength
  • Hope
  • Faith
  • Fight
  • Determination
  • Power
  • Courage
  • Tank

To calm me down…
Ow by Stephan Moccio
Taliesin Orchestra by Athair Ar Neamh (Enya)

During the painful parts of my runs…
Healing Begins by Tenth Avenue North

And to pump me up and push me forward…
Where Dem Girls At by David Guetta ft. Flo Rida & Nicki Minaj

If Dean Karnazes can run across America (by rockin’ 30-50 miles a day, every day), then I can run 15 for one morning. Check out the blog that’s documented his journey!

Personal Reminders:

  • No weight-lifting
  • Stretching and yoga = DO THEM!
  • No cross-training besides light spinning (I have my own bike now!) and walking
  • Drink tons of water
  • Easy on the alcohol and processed foods
  • Up the amount of fruit and veggies
  • Start carbing up (but not too much)

Run a big race before? What helped you keep cool? Any special tricks? Share the wealth!
